How we got there

01

The Challenge

LuxeCraft specialized in high-end custom furniture but their sales process was cumbersome: customers filled paper forms describing preferences, designers created 2D sketches over 3-5 days, revisions took weeks, and clients struggled to envision final products, leading to 22% order cancellations after seeing finished pieces. The 3.5-hour consultation process limited daily appointments and scaled poorly.

The company needed a self-service configurator where customers could design custom furniture in real-time, choosing dimensions, materials, colors, and features while seeing instant 3D visualizations. The solution required AR capability to preview life-size furniture in actual spaces, real-time pricing calculations, seamless handoff to production systems, and an engaging UX that made complex customization feel intuitive.

Our Approach

We analyzed 200 historical custom orders to identify common configuration patterns and decision trees. Research revealed customers made choices in a specific order: style first, then dimensions, material, color, and finally hardware/details. We designed a progressive disclosure interface guiding users through this natural decision flow with beautiful 3D previews at each step.

The platform was built using Three.js for real-time 3D rendering in browsers, with WebGL shaders for realistic wood grain and fabric textures. The mobile app used Unity for AR experiences via ARKit/ARCore. We created parametric 3D models for 12 furniture categories (sofas, tables, chairs, cabinets) with 2,500+ configuration options. A custom pricing engine calculated costs dynamically based on materials, dimensions, and complexity.

Integration with Autodesk Fusion 360 API enabled automatic generation of technical drawings and CNC machine files from customer configurations. Orders flowed directly into production scheduling software, eliminating manual data entry. The system integrated with Shopify for e-commerce checkout and inventory management.

The Results

The AR configurator transformed LuxeCraft's sales process, enabling customers to design custom furniture independently. Custom orders increased from 120 to 414 monthly, with average order value rising 38% as customers added premium features. Design consultation time dropped from 3.5 hours to 1 hour per order. The platform achieved 89% customer satisfaction and a 4.9/5 rating, with 73% of users sharing AR visualizations on social media, driving organic reach.

Real-Time 3D Configuration

The configurator rendered photorealistic 3D models at 60fps using PBR (physically-based rendering) materials. Users adjusted dimensions via intuitive sliders, swapped materials by clicking swatches, and changed colors with a color picker—all updating the 3D model instantly. The camera system allowed 360° rotation, zoom, and preset views (front, side, detail shots). Advanced features like rounded vs. square corners, drawer configurations, and hardware options were progressively revealed based on previous choices, preventing decision overwhelm.

Augmented Reality Visualization

The mobile AR feature placed configured furniture in customers' actual rooms at 1:1 scale with accurate proportions. Advanced spatial mapping ensured models sat correctly on floors and avoided intersecting with walls. Realistic shadows and reflections adapted to room lighting conditions. Users could take screenshots, record videos walking around the piece, and share via social media. This feature reduced order cancellations by 84% and increased customer confidence—92% of customers who used AR completed purchases.

Dynamic Pricing & Quoting

The pricing engine calculated costs in real-time considering material costs, labor complexity (curved vs. straight edges), waste factors, and current demand. Premium materials like walnut or Italian leather showed instant price impacts. Volume discounts applied automatically for multiple items. Customers could save configurations and request formal quotes, which generated detailed PDFs with itemized pricing, materials list, and 3D renderings. The transparent pricing increased trust and conversion by 67%.

Social Sharing & Viral Growth

Customers shared AR visualizations directly to Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook with one tap. Shared images included watermarked 'Designed with LuxeCraft' branding and links back to the configurator. This organic social sharing drove 18,000 qualified visitors in year one, accounting for 34% of new customer acquisition. User-generated content showcasing dream designs created a virtuous cycle of engagement and awareness.
